Yesterday morning, Danika was bouncing all morning. She was so excited. She couldn't wait to get to school. When I asked her to get dress, and do her teeth and hair- there was no fight. She was ready!
We arrived at the school and headed for the flag pole to meet her teacher and find out where to go from there. She played with Bryce, Neely and Landon (who was also waiting to start kindergarten!). Then, out walked their teacher- the one that both of us wanted! (Turns out the other retired, and she decided to do the afternoon and morning class)!
As she called names, all the kids were so excited. Then Ms. Weir explained that we would be walking over to their door, and going in. Everyone followed, kids excited, parents nervous.
The kids went in and found their hooks. Got on their new shoes, and went in the class to sit on the carpet. Most parents followed. Unbelievably to me, no one cried. Not one child, not one parent. (I am sure the parents held it together until they were in the car- for the record, I didn't cry- close, but didn't!)
The teacher started to read a story, but was interrupted by many hands up waiting to talk to her. She very nicely answered them, and when one boy was talking about his dog, she started asking all the kids about pets- asking the question and saying "hands up" then "hands down" when it was time for a new question. I was impressed!
Danika wasn't looking back at us, so I knew it was time for us to go. With one last wave, we headed out the door and home.
When we went to pick her up at 3, we realized how busy the street gets with parking, and I reminded myself that I am going to have to get their early- or find a different spot! But, they were all outside playing at the playground. It was so cute to watch. Danika made me so proud- when the teacher asked for the kindergarten kids to line up- she was first in line. Then she got to be the first to march around the playground to make sure all the kindergarten kids lined up. (I am loving this teacher!).
I was so impressed with that idea that the teacher had, and then noticed that the kids were in their outdoor shoes, and their backpacks were outside already! (Last year when picking up my niece, her teacher we NOT this organized, so I was a bit worried! But, seems like a great teacher already!)
Danika was so happy- she came running over and told me she LOVED it. I asked if she wanted to go back tomorrow (today), and she said "Yes, Can I please?" So, I know she had a great time!
At home, she pulled out her "homework". They had to put an item in the paper bag that said something about their summer. Danika picked a picture of her and Grandma going down the water slide! But, again, I was impressed by the teacher- the homework and notices were in a large, waterproof, zipped bag! SMART! And, after reading over all the papers- realized that she does a blog to let parents know what is going on in the class! YAY! And, our first thing, was to bring in a plant in a couple weeks- a small house plant, so the children could watch their plant grow as they are growing too!
I was happy, she is happy! I would have to say that is a great start to her school career!
As I put her to bed last night, she said to me "Mom, I had fun at school. But, you were my first teacher. I like my teacher, she is good. But you are my favourite teacher!" Man, I love this kid. And yes- this is where I went downstairs and shed a tear. A Happy tear, because as parents, We have reached the next milestone- where our teaching job gets a secondary support. And we made it, we did it. We raised, a beautiful, smart, passionate little girl.
We are so proud of her! And can't wait to see what the next milestones hold!
